Timber as an infinitely renewable resource...

Let's think about that for a minute. 

We often quote this passage from friend of Nullarbor Timber, Nick Dattner who articulated so beautifully the exponential benefits of timber.

“Imagine...

Imagine a material so technologically advanced that it is self generating, infinitely renewable, requires no attention, maintenance or capital investment, comes in thousands of varieties, has almost infinite uses and is produced in the world's largest factory whose pollution control is so effective that the only by-product is oxygen...

No it's not something from a science fiction....

Its wood."

The term "infinitely renewal resource" conjures up visions of a magic pudding of nature's endless, charitable bounty. Its easy to take for granted a self generating resource when it seems to constantly regenerate at no cost..

It would be wonderful to think that no matter how many times and how many industries step in to take a slice of the magic pudding for their own benefit, it will just magically and infinitely reappear and renew in the way it was designed to..

But for how long can it continue to do this? And and what cost when land clearing and logging industries are expecting to do what they want, where they want, for as long as they want to and have those resources magically reappear?

The truth is, trees and the eco system that supports it are not infinitely renewable. In the sage words of the American Indians whose people faced the same threat of instinction with the invasion of so called "progress" :

"Only when the last tree has been cut down, the last fish caught, the last river poisoned, only then will we realize that one cannot eat money."

An article published by the ABC:  ‘This is a cowboy operation’ by national environment and science reporter Michael Slezak, Mark Doman and Loretta Florance confirmed:

“Victoria is the most cleared state of Australia, with 66 per cent of its native vegetation removed since 1788.”

“Now, despite an official investigation and a change to the law to stop it from happening in the future, the state-owned logging company has again issued plans that include areas outside its allocations.”

Professor Lindenmayer worries that for Victoria’s mountain ash trees, a ban on native logging will be too little, too late.

“The Government needs to intervene and actually bring this industry to a close much faster than 2030,” he says.

“Not only do they store very large amounts of carbon and support very important populations of biodiversity, but they’re also critical for the supply of water to the 5 million people in Melbourne.

“How we treat these forests over the next five to 10 years will make a huge difference to a whole range of critical ecosystems, from carbon storage to biodiversity conservation and water supply.”

We trawled the internet for inspiration for live edge slab design in the modern home.  The sky is the limit when it comes to raw timber as these spectacular designs from all over the world illustrate.

Brendan Donchi, Managing Director of Nullarbor Sustainable Timber comes from a long line of timber lovers, mill workers and industry experts. In 1865 when his European ancestors arrived to work in the Australian bush as tree-fellers, a tradition was born of passing on knowledge, expertise and respect for the resource through generational bloodlines.

EARLY DAYS & A NEW INDUSTRY MODEL

Battista Donchi first arrived in Australia in the 1800s as a 15 year old looking for labouring work. After a period in Sydney, he travelled to Chiltern where the Donchi's love affair with Australian forest timbers began. His sons Jim and Pat continued to work in the Australian forests, developing a great love for Australian Hardwoods. Geoff, the son of Pat, along with many uncles and cousins followed the tradition.  It was Geoff's visionary wisdom and disdain for waste which sparked the fire that led to his son, Barry's pursuit of a new industry model

In the early 1980's, with great foresight and calculated planning, Brendan's father, Barry Donchi single-handedly pioneered the timber reclaiming industry, salvaging seasoned timbers others had stacked on the burning pile, housing them on dry, Murray River land for correct seasoning and creating a world-first re-milling plant. With an utter intolerance for waste and great respect for Australia's vast natural resources, Barry bought his son up through the ranks to take the company into the future. 

"Batista Donchi arrived from Teglio Italy in 1855 and worked as a timber cutter in a ship yard in Sydney. He was the first documented Italian in Australia. He moved to Chiltern and cut timber for the mines in the district, and burnt charcoal. He fathered 5 girls, and 5 boys. After the first war ,in the early twenties, his eldest son Jim, a couple of his brothers ,and his sons Bob, Lindsay (Charkey) and Clarence (Pat) were attracted to move to Orbost along with other family members, and the de Piazzas, to cut timber for the railways, with the rail line expanding from Bairnsdale to the East. There have been many Donchis cutting sleepers in the district, including Jim, Bob,Chark,Pat,Lenny, Mack, Geoff (my father), Allan, John, Gary,Myself, and others, including Allans and Johns sons. My son Brendan and grand son Tommy still cut some timber at Nullarbor in Moama, and i exercise the swing saw occasionally. Dad did a calculation one day on the approx number of sleepers cut by the family and it is on a tape recording somewhere".

Outdoor areas are often neglected areas of home and working spaces.

Unlike the commonly used Merbau, our Spotted Gum Decking is a sustainable, eco-friendly product, selected by timber experts who have been working on projects for many many decades. It ticks all boxes for us: Primarily, it does the job and lasts through the seasons. It assists builders reduce harm to the environment, not add to it. And it's also aesthetically pleasing.
 
The use of Merbau, alternatively, should be consciously reduced. It adds to poor regeneration and even when merbau trees are replaced by legal logging procedures, the tree itself is simply not sustainable. Merbau trees are often old growth, with sparse populations even in their native regions. They are slow to mature  - with some taking up to seventy five years or more to reach full maturity. They're far better left untouched.

During the redevelopment of the Uniting Church in Fitzroy, Victoria, Nullarbor Timber salvaged timbers that have been part of the church structure since 1871. That's over a century of use.  A week's hard toil lifting the Baltic flooring and Red Gum floor joist meant we could re-machine the seasoned timber and re-expose its magnificent characteristics and colours by shaving off the external shell.

These timbers are primed and ready for re-use for 50mm Recycled Redgum Tables and Benchtops that hold a century of ordained Melbourne history in its core. 

You can see the transformation in the photos below. Note that the church has now been renovated and re-purposed as a contemporary open living space. The timber used in the new design is not from Nullarbor, but we love the use of timber to display how effective the new design is, using man made materials and natural timber products to capture the cathedral beauty of the historic building.

Here at Nullarbor Timber, we thought we'd put the microscope on a local anomaly. We often take advantage of what we have in life or in the environment and that's no exception when it comes to the magnificent River Redgum, a uniquely tinctured timber with a stunning, blood red hue that is native to the very region in which we launched our timber company. Sometimes, despite searching the nation for hidden treasures, the most valuable gifts reside right in your back yard, a shoulder's glance away.

Eucalyptus trees are not particularly uncommon. There are over 700 species identified in the eucalyptus camaldulensis genus.  What is uncommon  however is a native strain of it - and by that we mean not purpose grown in plantations.

River Redgum is not only native to Australia in a time when indigenous species of trees are becoming increasingly rare, but also native to its original, ecological land base. In Australia, eucalypts have the broadest natural distribution of the species - usually around river ways and other wetlands.

The etymology of the species goes back to a clandestine Camaldoli monastery near Naples, Italy where it earnt its name.  A private estate garden near the Camaldoli monastery (L'Hortus Camaldulensis di Napoli), is where the first specimen came to be described in 1832. Material from this tree was used by Frederick Dehnhardt, Chief Gardener at the Botanic Gardens in Naples.

Eucalypts are often found along Australian waterways, but none more abundantly than River Redgum which is a vital part of the ecology as it gives stability to river banks. The towering tree can reach great heights and usually grows straight under certain conditions. Twisted branches occur in drier settings, which makes sense when you think of the hot summers around Echuca Moama and the magnificent, exaggerated branches of the Redgum eucalypt.

Interestingly, River Redgum is known colloquially as "The Widow Maker".  This may have derived from the tree's tendency to drop big boughs - often half the diameter of the trunk itself -  with no warning at all. This kind of self-pruning happens in the name of saving water. It also assists the wildlife who routinely take up residence in the holes that form which gives the redgum a very handy basis of fertiliser. River Redgum creates a welcoming habitat for many wildlife fraternities including bats, carpet pythons, rare parrots, and many birds. The dense foliage of the tree also provides shade and shelter from the sun in drier areas. Its a tree that keeps on giving! Due to river redgum's proximity to watercourses, it is exposed to regular flooding in its natural habitat. River red gum prefers soils with clay content. The trees flourish during regular flooding, since it recharges the sub-soil with water.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE  - THE  FORMATION OF THE BARMAH RED GUM FOREST

The formation of the famous Barmah red gum forests is due to a relatively recent geological event in the Murray-Darling Basin involving the Cadell Fault.

"River red gum seeds germinate readily after floods and require regular spring floods throughout their life to survive. In the Murray-Darling Basin, such floods are now rare due to river regulation for irrigation, and as a result, 75% of River red gums in the lower Murray are stressed, dead or dying." -  WIKIPEDIA

The largest remaining stand of river red gum is the (160,000 acres) Barmah-Millewa forest ( Nullarbor Timber Country!!) straddling the border of Victoria and New South Wales near our factory in Echuca Moama, due north of Melbourne, the state's capital city.

 It retains enormous cultural significance to the Indigenous traditional owners, the Yorta Yorta Nation. Like many stands of river red gum, the Barmah-Millewa has been drastically altered by over 100 years of timber harvesting. There is a paucity of old hollow-bearing trees which provide habitat for rare and threatened fauna such as the superb parrot, brush-tailed phascogale and inland carpet python.

You'd think the harsh toil of many years would decay its charm and inherent strength. On the contrary, the older it gets, like a fine wine, the more seasoned it becomes and the longer it will stay with you if handled correctly by professionals.

The Goulburn River was dammed by the southern end of the fault to create a natural lake. The installation of a 75kW grid connected solar system on our factory's roofing has been a huge success and to reduce our carbon footprint even further we also installed 15 X high bay & 34 tube LED lights. The panels were installed by local Bendigo company Cola Solar who assisted every step of the way. We are thrilled with how our factory system is working so efficiently under solar power and highly recommend making the change.

Actively reducing our carbon footprint  and helping the environment through less emissions is a responsibility we all need to take, in business and at home.

It's a spectacular thing.

Nullarbor Sustainable Timber has the largest collection of seasoned slabs in Australia, some of which have been air dried for up 16 years, primed and in premium condition for end use as statement tables, benchtops or artistic wall embellishments in modern design. 

Our slabs are sourced sustainably. We don't hunt and cut trees, stealing them from their natural environment where like wild animals, they belong. These slabs have been cut from large, ageing logs that were painstakingly salvaged to support environmental sustainability. 

Originally, the logs were wind felled or drought affected trees, others rescued from land clearing.

Each slab is shaved from a log - not unlike one perfectly cut slice of delectable vintage cheese liberated from a rounded block.

Like all of our recycled and sustainable timbers, no two slabs are the same and each exude one-off, unreplicable, designer qualities. Varying species including Red Gum, Marri, Jarrah, and French Oak.

Timber benchtops hold a rare quality but its important to remember that like anything of quality, extra care is required.

It shouldn't be a second career, taking care of your benchtops, but a little of knowledgable care will keep your bench tops in top shape for a long time.

Keep Them Sealed

Regular resealing of your bench tops is highly recommended. Coating can wear down as time goes on which can be unhygienic and not a particularly good look.. We recommend resealing your bench tops every 2 years or so. This will ensure they remain resistant to timber's greatest villain (moisture) and it will also make for hardier stain resistance and easier cleaning. 

Minimise Heat Effects

Sealants can only do so much. Steam and heat must be avoided as much as possible. 
Unattractive heat marks can burn onto timber and melt away coating which leaves it vulnerable to further damage and moisture.

Be mindful of steam coming from kitchen ovens and dishwashers and any other sources nearby.

Avoid Stains From Spills

Bathrooms and kitchen bench tops are susceptible to staining from a variety of domestic products. Wipe up any mess immediately to reduce the damage of the actual coating or sealant.

How To Repair Damage

Life is messy. If you have noticed damage on your bench tops, there are ways to rescue the quality and extend longevity. Not all damage needs repair. In fact, a 'lived in' look can add to the authentic appeal of timber, so don't stress. But 

For oiled bench tops, sand back and re-oil. This is a simple process that you can do yourself in your own home.
 
For polyurethane coated bench tops, you will need to seek professional assistance. Please don't try and do it yourself and seek advice from someone who knows what they're doing. The time will be worth it, giving you years of extended quality.

Where else on earth do you find something with such staggering beauty that it threatens to defy description. A structural piece that not only adds dimension and distinction to a room, but a history, steep in hundred year old history.

This recycled timber post was once a grey, weathered wharf pole, submerged under water for decades on end, being eaten away by Teredo Worms. 

It has been carefully salvaged from the demolition site by the team at Nullarbor Timber, along with 2000 other Turpentine, Ironbark, Red Gum and Tallowwood wharf poles from the North Wharf in Melbourne's Docklands.  Recycled and re-milled in our Moama plant, the posts are then put back into many structural projects around Australia.

Recycled timbers have been salvaged from bridges, wharves, shearing sheds and wool stores. Large in scale, well seasoned by time and tested by the elements, our recycled timber posts are abundant with character and add incomparable quality to home or commercial premises.

Nullarbor acquire new harvest timbers from accredited harvest sites only, dealing solely with responsible contractors and mills that follow the strictest of private forest management practices. 

We maximise the recoverable timbers from each log by processing a wide range or products and sizes from various species. We process these timbers to their highest potential value in order to sustain a viable industry without placing unrealistic demands o our natural resoures.

Posts can range in size from 150mm x 150mm up to 400mm x 400 mm in lengths of up to 12 metres.
