Live Edge Slabs - A Spectacular Statement

Live Edge Slabs
FROM TREE TO TABLE...

Live edge slabs are becoming ubiquitous in modern design.

Those wishing to make a major statement in a room are starting to recognise the high impact potential of raw timber slabs.

Coming directly from nature, our wind-felled slabs, once rescued from the elements and professionally dried have magnificent edges and speak of decades of natural growth. We recommend that they are be left raw and unrefined by traditional, straight-edge shaving methods.

The statement you'II make is one of respect for nature and its organic lines.

We take inspiration from George Katsutoshi Nakashima, the Japanese American wood worker, architect and furniture maker. As a key innovator and founding father of the American craft movement, Nakashima's body of work is revered in 20th century design and showed absolute respect for the beauty of timber's natural edges.

The Incomparable One Piece Nullarbor Slab

Picture
A timber table, bench top or even bedhead made from one single piece of wood... not joined from many segments, not machined to match a measured specification... but one singular slab, brought to you direct from mother nature herself.

It's a spectacular thing.

Nullarbor Sustainable Timber has the largest collection of seasoned slabs in Australia, some of which have been air dried for up 16 years, primed and in premium condition for end use as statement tables, benchtops or artistic wall embellishments in modern design.

Our slabs are sourced sustainably. We don't hunt and cut trees, stealing them from their natural environment where like wild animals, they belong. These slabs have been cut from large, ageing logs that were painstakingly salvaged to support environmental sustainability.

Originally, the logs were wind felled or drought affected trees, others rescued from land clearing.

Each slab is shaved from a log - not unlike one perfectly cut slice of delectable vintage cheese liberated from a rounded block.

Like all of our recycled and sustainable timbers, no two slabs are the same and each exude one-off, unreplicable, designer qualities. Varying species including Red Gum, Marri, Jarrah, and French Oak.

Browse the range at our Williamstown (Melbourne) outlet or stroll through the Moama mill to inspect them in their raw state.

Balancing An Industrial Palette With Timber Accents In Modern Bathroom Design

We're in the midst of a golden age of design. An influx of innovative projects has opened our eyes to the value of erstwhile un-useable industrial warehouse-inspired products.

We're seeing more concrete, stone and even corrugated iron materials used as backdrops in building projects. A lot more of an industrial influence - black tap ware, exposed pipes and beams, with minimalistic use of marble and reclaimed timber bench tops has created a new template for home building.
We were particularly impressed with the use of our Recycled Messmate as bench tops and bathroom drawers in this Young Gun Builders display home in Moama.

The use of geometric wallpaper and grey toned sink ware is particularly flattering. The black taps, shower heads and window frames add a resort style chic to the overall design.

Gone are the days of colonial style, ornate, timber-on-timber kitchens and bathrooms. We're thrilled to be part of the more design-conscious era where complimentary materials are used to accentuate the natural beauty of recycled timber.

It's a time of bold ideas, where pops of bright colour (see towels in picture two) and harsh man made materials such as concrete, glass and metal have become the perfect partners to sustainable timber. The heavily textured posts that you can see in the shower-facing garden are a perfect example of how a product once considered unsightly and in need of milling has been elevated to a level of living art. They hold a rare, sculptural quality which screams 'modern.' The splashes of bamboo leaves add extra harmony to the bathroom window view.

What would have once been considered a clash of taste is now the ultimate in futuristic design. Talk to us about how we can assist you in creating a similar look for your next project. For a product with the longevity it holds, you'II be surprised at how affordable it is.
